Break the Paycheck to Paycheck Cycle

How can you realistically save? Almost everyone can save something. Here’s how:

  • Define emergency.
A broken bone or a leaky water pipe count as emergencies. But, if you dip into your emergency fund every time you overspend on clothes or “deserve” a treat, the money won’t be there when you really need it.
  • Budget, budget, budget.
How can you save if you don’t know where you money is being spent? Start a budget by listing essential expenses (mortgage/rent, utilities, groceries) followed by extras (eating out, gifts, entertainment). If you’re in a situation where expenses are higher than income, you should look at your extras to find areas to cut. Since these expenses are typically non-essential, it should be easy to shave a few dollars in a few areas to bring you closer to your income.
  • Eat at home.
Eating out gets expensive. If you plan your meals in advance, it can be healthier and save you thousands of dollars a year.
