Cardio vs Weight Training
July 22, 2025
Almost all forms of exercise can be divided into one of two categories: cardio or strength training:
- Cardio (cardiovascular exercise) is anything that gets your heart rate up and the government suggests adults should get 2.5 hours of moderate activity every week. Benefits include improved circulation, increased bone density (to help combat osteoporosis), improved sleep and reduced anxiety.
- Strength training helps the different muscles in your body become stronger and more powerful. If you want to tone muscle groups and strengthen bones a weight lifting regime is vital—and it’s key to losing weight. Hours after you are done with your workout your body is still burning calories. The more muscle you have the more calories you’ll burn throughout the day.
Make them both part of your routine
It’s also essential to make time for both cardio and strength training if weight loss is your goal and you want to focus on burning maximum calories—though, each type of training burns calories in a slightly different way.
