Is your identity safe?

What can you do?
As soon as you realize your identity has been stolen, take action. Acting quickly can limit further damage. Here are two options to consider:

  • Option 1: Go to www.identitytheft.gov. The Federal Trade Commission has identified steps to take right way. You’ll want to call the companies where you know the fraud occurred, place a fraud alert and get your credit report, report identity theft with the FTC, and file a police report. The site offers a detailed checklist to consider and complete, if applicable.
  • Option 2: Consider hiring an identity theft service, such as the one offered by New York Life through CAU. Identity theft protection services can’t stop it from happening, but they can give you the tools and steps to recover your identity. They can place fraud alerts or freezes on your credit reports and remove your name from marketing mailing lists. Many people find it valuable and convenient to pay a company to keep track of their financial accounts, credit reports, and personal information. To learn more, click here.
