Stress and Your Health

To a certain degree, feeling stressed is a normal, healthy response to life’s events and challenges. However, over time, the body’s continued response to regular stress can lead to health issues. Some of the conditions that are related to chronic stress (stress over a long period of time) include:

  • Backaches and neck pain
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Sleep and appetite disturbances (eating more than you need or not eating enough)
  • Gastrointestinal problems (like chronic heartburn or ulcers)
  • Skin diseases and problems
  • Colitis (inflamed colon)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Diabetes

You can offset the impacts stress has on your body every day by:

  1. Engage in regular exercise.  Daily exercise can help relieve the physiological symptoms of stress and increase your overall emotional and physical well-being.
  2. Eat a balanced diet. Reduce the amount of caffeine, sugar and salt in your diet, as these substances can increase tension.
  3. Get enough sleep. During sleep, our bodies have the chance to renew the resources needed to cope with everyday stress.
  4. Engage in leisure activities. Finding an enjoyable hobby or spending more time with family and friends can help reduce your stress level.
