What is an EOB?

Explanation of Benefits (EOBs)
An EOB is just as it sounds: it’s an explanation of the benefits your plan will pay. EOBs are created (and sent to you electronically or through the mail) each time you receive a service and incur a claim. It is a summary of the service(s) you received, and it shows all associated costs:
- The full cost of the service
- The “allowable” amount per your insurance plan
- How much money the plan has paid toward the service, if any
- How much the provider needs from you, if any
EOBs typically state “This is not a bill”—they are instead a summary of the charges and payments you can expect your plan to make and the amount of money you can expect to receive an invoice for. Here is an example of what an EOB may look like. If you have any questions about the information on your EOB, reach out to your Benefit Guardian.
